SCOUT NOTES

ROVERS TO VISIT LAKE HAUROKO

PATHFINDER)

(By

This week-end a party of 16 rovers will visit Lake Hauroko if the weather is suitable. This is a fairly hard hike of nine miles after a 65-mile car trip but more rovers than usual wish to go. Last Saturday evening the rovers met the St. John’s rangers for the last combined meeting of the year. The evening was well taken up with a mock parliament, in which the rovers introduced the second reading of a bill on the taxation of bachelors. The speaker was Miss McKenzie, secretary of the Gore guides, and Mr G. E. T., Dorman, the District Commissioner of Scouts, was the Independent member. At the voting the party in power, the rovers, obtained an even vote, so the speaker exercised her casting vote which rejected the bill. COPPER TRAIL The annual good turn of the Invercargill scouts for the Children’s Health Camp will be the making of a Copper Trail on Wednesday, People’s Day at the Invercargill Show. This task is not always very pleasant so each of the six troops has been allotted an hour and a-half of duty, as follows; 12-1.30 p.m. St. Paul’s; 1.30-2 p.m., Sea Scouts; 34.30 p.m. Gladstone; 4.30-6 p.m. North Invercargill; 6-7.30 p.m. Southern Cross; 7.30-9 p.m. Rawhiti. Although more than £l2 was collected last time, there should be more this year. PARENTS’ COMMITTEE “Each” group, whether “open” or “controlled,” shall be under the supervision of a Group Committee of at least five adult citizens, elected at a meeting convened for the purpose. The Group Scoutmaster, Rover Scout Leader, Scoutmaster and Cubmaster, are ex officio members of the Group Committee, in addition to the five mentioned above. The Rover Mates, Assistant Scoutmasters and Assistant Cubmasters should be encouraged and allowed to attend the Group Committee meetings, but have no vote. In the absence of the Scoutmaster, Cubmaster, or Rover Scout Leader, one Assistant may vote instead. The duties of a Group Committee are:—

(a) To provide the group with the necessary officers —recommendation for their appointment being made by resolution of the committee. (b) To arrange a meeting place for the troop and pack. (c) To see that the regulations with regard to the minimum and maximum ages of a rover scout, scout or cub are strictly adhered to. (d) To control and administer the grottp finance. (Boys’ pence are to be administered by the scouter in charge. Accounts are to be .audited by the Group Committee.) (e) To safeguard the group property. (f) In conjunction with the group scouters, to arrange for camps. (g) To assist the scouters by obtaining outsiders for all technical instruction and proficiency badge work. (h) To arrange regular visits to the

group. (i) To bring to notice, with evidence of eye witnesses, any acts of gal-
