NEW ZEALAND LAMB CHALLENGED

AUSTRALIAN EXHIBITION AT SMITHFIELD

(Received December 8, 6.30 p.m.) LONDON, December 7. A campaign to combat the supremacy of New Zealand lamb in the British market has been inaugurated by the Australian Meat Board’s first export lamb competition throughout Australia, in conjunction with the extension for six months of the Council of the Australian Society of Breeders’ judging of British sheep for the all-Australian grand champion, the all-Australian Southdown and all-Australian other British breeds. An exhibition at Smithfield of 185 Australina carcasses was visited by representatives of Argentina, Canada, the United States and New Zealand. Mr J. I. Hamilton, the judge, said competition was an incentive, to producers to export lamb suitable for the Home market and which would fill a gap after the New Zealand season. The carcasses entered were all neat and compact—a revelation of what Australia was capable of producing. The South Australian Trade Commissioner (Mr W. F. McCann) said the board was determined to keep pace with New Zealand’s publicity.
