Mr T. Rigg, director of the Cawthron Institute, Nelson, and Dr J. K. Dixon, of the institute staff, have been on a short visit to Southland conducting soil researches. They will return north today. Mr A. D. Coates, at present sole teacher at the Gummies Bush school, has been appointed first assistant at the Balclutha school. Mr S. C. McMartin, who has been attached to the staff of the Railways Department, Gore, for the last two years, has been advised of his transfer to Hornby, and leaves to take up his new position this morning. He will be succeeded by Mr N. J. O’Brien, of Hornby.
Messrs W. Robson, T. H. Thew and M. Hartley (Dunedin) are guests at the Club Hotel. Guests at the Grand Hotel include Messrs A. W. Beals and A. W. Powell (Christchurch), F. Abbott (Victoria, 8.C., Canada), B. C. Clarkson (Wellington), J. R. Patrick (Waimate), W. Cotes (Auckland), L. E. Bullock, R. Jones, R. Elliott and P. Caley (Dunedin). Mr D. L. Dowdell, general manager of the Orient Line in Australia for the past 18 years, will retire at the end of the year. Mr A. W. Johnson, the present branch manager in Sydney who has been associated with the company for 37 years, has been appointed general manager from January 1. Mr L. J. Morshead has been appointed branch manager in Sydney and Mr R. H. Norman branch manager in Melbourne, both as from January 1.
