CHARGE REDUCED BY MINES DEPARTMENT

COLLECTION OF REVENUE FROM GOLDFIELDS

(From Our Parliamentary Reporter) WELLINGTON, December 7. The charge to be made by the Mines Department for collecting goldfields revenue on behalf of local authorities is to be reduced from 10 per cent, to five per cent., as a result of an amendment to the Mining Amendment Act recommended by the Governor-General under the Constitution Act. The necessary Governor-General’s Message giving effect to the change was introduced in the House of Representatives today and the amendment was passed. “I stated when the Bill was before the House,” said the Minister of Mines (the Hon. P. C. Webb), “that I had no objection to reducing the department’s deduction from 10 per cent, to five per cent. However, it was impossible on constitutional grounds for the Legislative Council to make the necessary amendment, but we are taking the course now being followed in order to meet the wishes of most country members.”
