SUMMER FLOWERS ON DISPLAY

FINE EXHIBITION OF ROSES i HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY’S ANNUAL SHOW Officials of the Invercargill Horticultural Society were unanimous in the opinion that the society’s exhibition of , roses and summer flowers, which was i held in Everybody’s yesterday after- ; noon and evening, was the most successful yet staged. This opinion was based not only on the entries which were much more numerous than in previous years, but because the ex- ’ hibits themselves were of an incomi parably higher standard. 1 High praise of the roses was given ’ by the judge (Mr J. Bayne), who said that he had not before at any of the society’s shows seen so many outstanding blooms. In many classes it had been difficult to make a decision. A ) pleasing feature of the display, he said, was the number of new competitors who had competed with success. Messrs E. J. Mills and F. G. HallJones and Mrs W. Grieve were the most prominent exhibitors in this section, Mr Mills exhibiting the champion bloom, a magnificent specimen of the Sir David Davis variety. Some outstanding sweet peas were 5 displayed by Mr W. G. Pearce, who had many awards in this section. - An exhibition of flowers and vegetables by Sir Robert Anderson attracted much attention, as did the display of 60 different varieties of roses shown by the City Reserves Department. Interest was also .caused by an exhibit of indoor pot plants by Mrs A. W. Jones. In the evening Mr Mills gave a lecture on the cultivation of roses. i Mrs B. R. Curson, judge of the decorative section, described the blooms as being of high quality. The display this year was easily the most success--3 ful yet held by the society, she said, and the quality of the exhibits and the increased number of entries augured well for future shows. There were some outstanding exhibits among the baskets, but the number of entries was disappointing. The winning bowl was well arranged and was in perfect harmony, and the dress sprays exhibited were also of a high standard. The list of awards is:— ROSE SECTION 1. Exhibit of roses (two entries): F.
