LORNEVILLE STOCK SALE

RISING MARKET FOR SHEEP

Short Supply Causes Prices To Soar

FAT CATTLE SELL AT RECENT RATES

A smaller yarding of fat sheep and the competition provided by several country butchers were responsible for a buoyant fat sheep market at the Lorneville stock sale yesterday, values rising by 4/- to 5/- a head for ewes and by 8/- a head for wethers. Although the market was a double one, because of the Southland Agricultural and Pastoral Society’s Summer Show next week, the entry of fat sheep was only half as big as the previous sale and prices rose as a result. One of the largest entries of fat cattle for some time was forward yesterday. There was no easing of values, however, and the market remained firm throughout, values in some instances showing a slight improvement. Fifty fat lambs were yarded and these were of quite good quality. Good prices were obtained, heavy lambs selling at up to 31/-. Following is a comparative table of the yardings of the last two sales:—

Included in yesterday’s yardings were 50 fat lambs, 17 vealers, 25 bulls and 12 dairy cows. FAT CATTLE There was an unusually large yarding of fat cattle. Not many heavyweight bullocks were yarded but there were some very good quality medium weight bullocks, cows and heifers for* ward. Considering the large yarding, the market was very sound, values throughout remaining quite firm at last week’s rates and in many cases showing a slight improvement. Prime quality bullocks made from £l4 10/- to £l5 12/6, medium quality from £l2 to £l3, handy weights from £lO 15/to £ll 15/- and light weights from £8 10/- to £9 15/-. Extra prime cows sold up to £ll 2/6, prime quality from £9 15/- to £lO 5/-, good quality from £8 10/- to £9 5/-, medium quality from £7 5/- to £7 15/. Unfinished sorts from £5 5/- to £6. Prime quality heifers fetched from £9 5/- to £lO, good quality £8 5/- to £9 and lighter weights £6 10/- to £7 10/-.
