SERVICE AT SEA

BRITISH EMPIRE MEDAL PRESENTED LONDON, October -30. The British Empire Medal for meritorious service at sea was presented at the Board of Trade, Whitehall, this week to Mr Patrick Reynolds, boatswain of the New Zealand Shipping Company’s m.v. Durham (10,892 tons gross), which sails from Liverpool on December 18 on her next trip to New Zealand and is due to arrive in Auckland on January 20. Mr Reynolds comes from Drogheda, Ireland. He is 49. He first went to sea as an ordinary seaman in a sailing vessel in 1903. He served in sailing vessels until 1910, when he joined the Tutonic as quartermaster. As a Royal Naval Reserve, he was called up in 1914 and he returned to the Mercantile Marine with the 1914-15 Star, the General Service Medal, the Victoria Medal, and the R..W.R. Good Conduct Badge (First Class). Mr Reynolds has been with the New Zealand Shipping Company since 1923, and from 1926 he has been boatswain on various training ships, giving excellent service in the training of officers for the Mercantile Marine. In 1935 he was awarded King George V’s Silver Jubilee Medal for ratings who worked with the service through the reign. He has under his charge on the Durham 36 apprentices. Mr H. J. F. Mills (London manager of the New Zealand Shipping Company), Captain M. J. Anderson (Assistant Marine Superintendent), and Captain H. L. Upton (Master of the Durham), attended the presentation.
