The wide range of the Spanish, civil war was well illustrated in an incident recounted to a reporter of The Press, Christchurch, by Miss Norah Nutt, who has returned to Christchurch after spending nine years abroad. When the ship on which Miss Nutt was going to South America called at Teneriffe, revolt had already broken out and the island had fallen into the hands of the insurgents. One woman passenger from the ship saw 30 prisoners, including the Governor of the island, who were to be shot the next morning. The ship on whieh Miss Nutt returned from South America, about seven months later, was not allowed to call at Teneriffe, and a call had to be made at St. Vincent. On arrival at Lisbon on her way back to England, Miss Nutt saw the wreckage of buildings which had been destroyed by rebel battelships, but she said that it was difficult to realize that war was being waged so near.
