TENNIS

TOWN TEAM BEATS EASTERN A. T. BAIRD IN GOOD FORM The annual tennis match between a Town team and Eastern Southland was played at Gore on Saturday in glorious sunshine. Town had an easy victory and lost only two matches out of the 24. An early start was made and the matches were finished in good time. cc In the men’s singles Baird started oti at a fast pace against McLeod and ran to a 5-0 lead in the first set before McLeod found touch and took a game. Baird was in great form, however, and he took the next game with ease and the set 6-1. In the second set McLeod gave a better display and the spectators were given a splendid exhibition of hard driving. Baird’s overhead work was too accurate for McLeod, and after the score had reached 4-all he romped through the last two games to take the set 6-4. Sharp was the only Eastern player to win his single and he brought this about after a prolonged struggle with Deaker in the first set, which he won 10-8. Playing in the hot sun, both players were visibly tired in the second | set which was won by Sharp 6-3. A feature of Sharp's play was his accurate driving. His backhand was very weak, however, and he sent over some poor returns. , The match between McCallum ana Cockerill was one of the two singles to go to three .sets. Cockerill took the first set easily 6-1. His accurate chop shots troubled McCallum considerably in this set. The latter, however, found touch in the second set and volleyed and smashed very well, running to a lead of 4-1. Cockerill evened the scores at 4-all, but McCallum took the next two and the set. Cockerill’s leg, which he injured earlier in the week, gave him some troube in the third set and he was not able to cover the court quickly enough to return many shots. McCallum, on the other hand, was playing a great game and he took the set 6-3 and the match. Howe carried too many guns for Welsh and won in straight sets, 6-2, 6-4. Welsh fought hard and made some brilliant recoveries, but his opponent was right on his game and smashed and volleyed most successfully. Shand and Baird had a good match and after taking the first set easily 6-2, Shand had a hard struggle to get home in the second set. He eventually won 7-5, but only after many long rallies had taken place. Shand’s steadiness was too much for Baird, who perhaps was not playing quite up to true form. After dropping the first set 5-7, Perrin struck form in his match against Strang and took the next two sets 6-4, 6-2 and the match. WOMEN’S MATCHES All of the women’s singles were won by Town by big margins. The matches were not as one-sided as the scores indicate, however, and many long rallies took place in nearly every match. Mrs Hanan beat Miss K. Jopp 9-2 after a long game. When the score was 7-2, Miss Jopp made a stand. The game lasted over 10 minutes, each player taking the vantage in turn until Mrs Hanan sent in a good smash which did not give Miss Jopp a chance. The next game was won rather easily by Mrs Hanan and she took the set 9-2. Mrs Salisbury gave a good display of smashing in her match against Mrs Anderson, and her service was also very forceful. The men’s doubles matches provided the high light of the day’s tennis and some brilliant form was produced. The' match between McCallum and Howe! and Cockerill and Welsh was a picnic of volleys, smashes, lobs and drives. The Town pair had to fight hard to win the first set 8-6, but they romped through the second and won it easily 6-1. 'Hie third men’s double also provided some interesting play, the Town pair eventually winning 4-6, 7-5, 6-3. The second match, won by Eastern, was the first women’s double. This came as rather a surprise, but the steadiness of the Eastern pair proved too much for the Town players and the match was won by Eastern after three sets had been played.
