£260 TO BE AWARDED IN PRIZES A special meeting of the directors of the Invercargill Caledonian Society was held last evening to make final arrangements for the Caledonian Games to be held in Invercargill on Saturday, January 15. Mr John MacGregor was chairman and there were present:— Messrs Ellis Sutton, I. D. McKenzie, J. M. Mackintosh, R. G. Diack, W. Young, A. E. Cocker, J. D. Campbell, D. W. Anderson, V. Vial, H. Insall, R. D. Donaldson, T. M. Rankin, W. Murdoch and the secretary (Mr M. C. Wilson). It was stated that a comprehensive programme of 50 events had been arranged, with a total prize-list of £260. Posters and pocket programmes would be available within about a week. Mi’ Sutton was appointed superintendent. of games and Mr J. Matheson deputy superintendent. Officials for all sections of the programme were elected. A special feature of the programme, it was stated, would be the South Island championship A grade strathspeys and reels (piping). A racing axe would be awarded to the winner of the 15-in underhand chop. The Rankin Cup competition for piping would be included, and the Southland Centre of the Piping and Dancing Association’s trophy of £5 5/- and the gold medal for the dancer gaining the most points in open classes would also be offered. Entries would close on January 3. It was stated that an effort would be made to have special and delayed trains run on the day of the meeting. Handicaps would be published on the Wednesday before the sports. Mr W. A. McGregor was elected to the directorate to fill a vacancy. Messrs J. D. Campbell and W. Young were appointed to wait on the Southland A. and P. Association to obtain the use of the show grounds some weeks before the games in order to prepare the track.
