FALSE DECLARATIONS OF SUSTENANCE

FINES IMPOSED ON FIVE MEN (United, Press Association) WANGANUI, November 1. For making false declarations of sustenance, Mr J. H. Salmon, S.M., inflicted the following fines:—Ross Wallace Rowntree £2O, George Wright Reynolds £2O, Donald Boyd Burke £3, Daniel Mason £l4 and Victor Dawson Milne £l5. CASES AT WHANGAREI WHANGAREI, November 1. Three men were charged in thb Magistrate’s Court today with obtaining sums of money from the Employment Promotion Fund by means of false pretences. Albert Edwards was fined £3 with costs 10/- on a charge of obtaining £1 15/-. Mate Jelcich faced three charges of obtaining sums totalling £6 8/2 and on each charge was fined £3 with 10/costs Henry Richard Collier had to answer six charges of the same nature, the amount involved being £7 12/-. Collier was fined £lO ?0/-. William Scally was charged that being the recipient of a sustenance allowance under the Employment Promotion Act he made eighteen false declarations of weekly income, thereby obtaining £2O 17/- to which he was not entitled. Counsel said Scally had saved enough to repay the excess and it had been offered the department, who said they would have to prosecute. Counsel added that accused was in bad health and was incapable of filling in the form properly. . , , Scally was fined £25 with costs 10/-,
