BLOMFIELD WINS CHAMPIONSHIP (United Press Association) AUCKLAND, October 31. The final of the New Zealand wrestling championship was decided on Saturday evening when “Lofty” Blomfield, of Auckland, defeated Joe Woods, of America, by two falls to one. The winner thus earned the right of proceeding to America for a match against “Bronko” Nagurski, holder of the world’s title. The three falls were all submission ones. The first was gained by Woods in the fourth round by means of a Boston crab. This had been preceded by a series of forearm jolts. There was a further exchange of powerful forearm jolting in the seventh round before Blomfield obtained a reverse toehold which he converted into an octopus clamp. Woods refused to give in for several seconds and after he did so he had to be assisted to his comer, where his second massaged his rib muscle. Woods limped out when the gong sounded for the final round. He was subjected to another barrage of jolts before being tripped preparatory to the application of a second octopus clamp. He resisted for some time before submitting. He was once more lifted to his corner. Upon the conclusion of the bout the championship belt was placed round Blomfield. NOLAND BEATS WADE GISBORNE, October 31. Meeting in the concluding bout of the 1937 season Glen Wade and Don Noland gave a fair attendance last night little to enthuse over. Wade gained a fall in the third round with a body press. In the fifth round Noland threw Wade from the ring three times. Wade injured his leg on the Press table and was unable to return to the ring in 20 seconds. He was unable to continue and the bout was awarded to Noland. TEAM FOR EMPIRE GAMES WELLINGTON, October CO. The conference of delegates of the Dominion Wrestling Union this week appointed Mr J. Creeke, of Wellington, as manager of the team to be sent to the Empire Games in Sydney, and Mr A. P. Craig, of Christchurch, as trainer. A full team will be sent.
