NO SUNSHINE ON ONE DAY

WEATHER FOR MONTH OF OCTOBER RAINFALL BELOW AVERAGE October in Invercargill was a month of sunshine. The sun shone on 30 days and for 234.8 hours. In September there were 131 hours of sunshine. Only one day, October 1, was without sunshine, and the average for the 31 days was 7.5 hours a day. The hours of sunshine for the month must be almost a record, according to Mr J. L. Lennie, the Government weather recorder. October is regarded as one of the wettest months of the year. The average rainfall over a period of 50 years is 4.50 in. Last month, however, only 1.37 in of rain fell. In October 1936 the rainfall was 4.38 in and the average for the last three years 2.58 in. The month has been dry and one of warmth and mildness. Rain fell on 12 days, but on several of these there was less than 10 points. Early in the month there were a number of days of bright sunshine. The maximum number of hours of sunshine, 13, was recorded on October 23, and on October 14, 15 and 24 there were 12 or more hours of sunshine. Five other days had 11 or more hours. No long periods of rain were recorded. On no occasion was there rain on more than two successive days, but there were two periods of four and five days without rain. The total rainfall for the 10 months, January to October, is 34.21 in, an average of 3.42 in. For the same period in 1936 it was 40.10 in, an average of 4.01 in and in 1935 39.16 in, an average of 3.91 in. Temperatures throughout the month generally were warm. On 16 days temperatures of 60 degrees or more were recorded. The highest was 71 degrees on October 23, the day of 13 hours’ sunshine. There were four frosts, but only one, on October 25, was severe enough to affect vegetation. Six degrees were recorded that day. Only one day passed without wind and cloud. Westerlies prevailed, _ although during some of the fine periods easterlies and north-easterlies blew. There were six days on which the conditions were stormy or rough, the strong westerlies of the first week of the month causing boisterous conditions. , Following are the detailed returns as supplied by Mr Lennie: — d - ’9
