SPRINGBOKS CHEERED AT DURBAN

ARRIVAL HOME AFTER RUGBY TOUR (Received October 31, 6.30 p.m.) DURBAN, October 30. Cheering crowds gathered at the quayside to welcome home the Springboks. Tugs sounded their sirens,, and aeroplanes zoomed overhead. . The captain (Mr P. J. Nel) expressed appreciation of the hospitality received in Australia and New Zealand. “We have brought back the ‘Ashes,’ ” he said. “We have achieved what no previous South African team has done: we have beaten the All Blacks in a series of Tests. And the secret of it was team work.” During the voyage the players discussed the project of forming a Springbok Club, membership of which would be open to any man who had won a South African Rugby jersey. Mr Nel said he hoped the board would approve the idea.
