THE WEATHER UNSETTLED AND SQUALLY

(Special to The Times) WELLINGTON, October 31. Following is the special weather forecast for Southland, as issued by the Meteorological Office, Wellington:— Strong westerly winds, backing to southerlies. Weather unsettled and squally, with intermittent rain and becoming colder. Seas rough. Following is the Dominion forecast:— Weather unsettled in the western districts from Taranaki southwards and in the far south, with rain in most places. Elsewhere still fair to fine but later some showers extending to eastern districts of the South Island. Temperatures mild but becoming colder tomorrow in the southern half of the South Island. General Situation.—An anti-cyclone still extends across the North Island, but it has been gradually losing intensity, while a series of moderate westerly depressions has continued to in the south. The pressure is now high over the greater part of Australia. Winds.—Southerly at first north ot Kawhia and cast Cape but otherwise north-westerly to westerly prevailing. Moderate to strong generally and reaching gale force at places south of New Plymouth and Castlepoint; backing to southerly in the southern portion of the South Island. Seas.—New Zealand waters, rather rough to rough south of Cape Egrnont and about Cook and Foveaux Straits. Elsewhere slight to moderate. Eastern Tasman Sea, moderate to strong northwest to west winds, backing shortly to southerlies in the southern portion. Seas moderate in the northern portion and rather rough to rough in the southern.

In the evening there was a heavy fall of rain. Yesterday the weather was fine, but windy during the day. In the evening the weather was squally. There were several rain showers, and the temperature was cold. At one o’clock this morning the weather was cold and stormy, with a strong westerly wind.
