INVERCARGILL CLUB

Big Attendance And Keen Racing BLUE SPARK SECURES CUP HAPPINESS GIVES GOOD PERFORMANCE The spring meeting of the Invercargill Trotting Club, which was held on Saturday, was an outstanding success in every way. The racing was keen, with close finishes, there was a paiticularly good attendance and the weather was fine and warm. A strong wind, however, raised clouds of dust which made conditions disagreeable at times. The policy of the club in holding two one-day meetings appears to be justified. The gate receipts amounted to £386 13/6, compared with £lB9 9/6 on the first day of the meeting in March, and £268 14/- on the second day. The amount handled by the totalizator also showed a big increase over the figures for last year. The machine handled £14,137 10/-, compared with £8967 10/- on the first day of the meeting in March, and £9901 10/- on the second day. The club is expected to show a handsome profit on the fixture. . , Mr T. Marshall’s starting was of a high order. The president, Mr J. B. Thomson, kept the programme well up to time and the secretarial staff under Mr J. E. Cuthill, maintained a high standard of efficiency. ' The Maiden Handicap was a good race with a close finish, Edith Grattan just beating Seascape and Sydney Grand. , - , , Traveltone and Jenny s Guy had an interesting duel in the Monowai Handicap, the former winning narrowly. ( The Thomson Handicap went to Erin s Chief, the race also providing a close finish. Blue Spark won the Invercargill Trotting Cup rather comfortably, and is a greatly improved pacer. Frisco Silk and Happiness were responsible for good performances, especially the The Crescent Handicap was won by the favourite Grand Meteor, with Bright Voyage just beating Master Potts for second. .... . Jenny’s Guy gave a good exhibition of trotting to win the Travis Memorial and give Washdyke its second winner of the day. Seascape deservedly won the Takitimu Handicap, in saddle, from a promising sort in Guy Nut. Silver Laddie scored a surprise, but popular, win in the Members’ Handicap to return a double figure quote. The results were as follows:

RACING REVIEWED MAIDEN HANDICAP FIELD The Maiden Handicap field provided a good race with Edith Grattan winning narrowly from Seascape. The favourites were the coupled Aqua Bond and Iron Duke (£2Ol and £l7l 10/-), Edith Grattan (£lBl 10/- and £154) and Seascape (£lO3 10/- and £151). Samara, and Abel broke at the start and after going a short distance Loyalist and Dunalister followed suit. Iron Duke and Seascape were first to show out from Guy View and Edith Grattan. At the stand Iron Duke led Seascape, Guy View, Edith Grattan and Sydney Grand. Aqua Bond was well back here after making a tangle. Racing into the back Iron Duke was still making play from Seascape, Edith Grattan and Sydney Grand. Aqua Bond put in a fast run and Edith Grattan went into the lead at the five furlong post. Half a mile from home Edith Grattan was a length clear of Aqua Bond, Iron Duke, Seascape and Sydney Grand who were racing together. Aqua Bond tired and into the straight Edith Grattan led Iron Duke, Sydney Grand, Seascape and Aqua Bond. Iron Duke broke below the distance and Seascape went after the leader. Edith Grattan held her own to beat Seascape by half a length. Sydney Grand was two lengths away, then Guy View, Iron Duke and Aqua Bond. Edith Grattan did not have much to spare at the finish from Seascape who was not handled with the best of judgment. Sydney Grand and Guy View went erratic races. Aqua Bond showed a lot of speed in the middle stages but could not carry on. Iron Duke was responsible for a good effort. MONOWAI HANDICAP The Monowai Handicap developed into a dual between Traveltone and Jenny’s Guy, the two favourites and Traveltone just won. The best supported were Jenny’s Guy (£253 10/- and £177 10/-), Traveltone (£127 and £158) and Appomatox (£B7 and £152 10/-). Betty Drusus, Silver Mountain and Fair Voyage broke at the start and Happy Peter went to a tangle shortly after. Traveltone, Jenny’s Guy and Silver Mountain were prominent early, but after two furlongs Traveltone led Jenny’s Guy, Appomatox and Silver Mountain. The three leaders opened up a big gap on the rest of the field, who were going very unsteadily. Ap-

pomatox was closing rapidly on the leaders at five furlongs when he broke and lost ground. Jenny’s Guy was only half a length behind Traveltone across the top with Appomatox closing up when he broke again. Traveltone and Jenny’s Guy had a keen contest home with Traveltone prevailing by half a length. Appomatox was 12 lengths away then a big gap to Betty Drusus and Silver Mountain. Traveltone went steadily all the way and deserved his win. Jenny’s Guy put in one break but came home well. Appomatox was unlucky. He showed a good deal of speed. The rest were outclassed. THOMSON HANDICAP There was a fine race in the Thomson Handicap with five horses going across the line with little between them. Erin’s Chief won narrowly from Desert Cloud and Dusky Sound. The favourites were Dusky Sound (£270 10/- and £194 10/-), Mountain Lad (£172 10/and £173 10/-) and Suncup (£l4l and £159). All began well but Parrish Chimes broke early and would not settle down. Desert Cloud, Guywin and Suncup were prominent early from Erin’s Chief and Dusky Sound. Suncup had gone to the front after half a mile from Desert Cloud and Guywin. With a mile to go Dusky Sound, who had raced past the .leaders in the straight, had taken charge from Suncup, Mountain Lad, Guywin and Desert Cloud. Racing down the back Dusky Sound was closely attended by Mountain Lad, Suncup, Guywin, Desert Cloud and Erin’s Chief. The order was the same to the straight and a great race home ensued. Erin’s Chief finished best to beat Desert Cloud by half a length. Dusky Sound threequarters of a length away, Mountain Lad right up and Guywin on his wheel. Walter Gay was next. Erin’s Chief stayed on best and is a solid sort. Desert Cloud went a good race, but Dusky Sound was taken to the front too soon. Mountain Lad and Guywin went good races, but the others failed for stamina. CUP CONTEST Favourite for the Invercargill Trotting Cup, Blue Spark won in convincing fashion from a good field after a fine race. Blue Spark (£277 and £211), Loyal Sun (£l7O 10/- and £177) and Silver Guy (£122 and £137) were the favourites. Silver Laddie and Roan Duke tangled at the signal, Frisco Silk and Moko Child being first prominent. When they had settled down Norma Grattan was in front from Frisco Silk, Blue Spark, Moko Child and Vologda. Racing through the straight with nine furlongs to go, Norma Grattan was making play from Blue Spark, Frisco Silk, Vologda, Roan Duke and Loyal Sun. Happiness had made up a good deal of ground and was handy to the leaders entering the back stretch where Blue Spark had taken charge from Vologda, Norma Grattan, Frisco Silk and Roan Duke, then Happiness. Happiness ran up to Blue Spark and this pair were a length clear across the top from Frisco Silk, Moko Child, Vologda and Roan Duke. Blue Spark led into the straight from Happiness, Frisco Silk (on the rails), Moko Child, Vologda, Roan Duke and Royal Sun. Blue Spark did not have to do his best to beat Frisco Silk by a length and a-quarter, Happiness a length away then Moko Child, Harold Guy, Vologda, Norma Gratian and Roan Duke. Blue Spark was confidently handled and won with something in hand. He has improved a good deal in his manners. Frisco Silk was not well placed over the final half mile, being tucked in on the rails. He was responsible for a good race. Happiness dwelt early and lost a good deal of ground. His middle mile must have been particularly fast and it was a splendid effort. Moko Child had every chance but the rest were not in it over the final stages. The first mile was run in 2.25 and the mile and a-half in 3.33 2-5. i CRESCENT HANDICAP Taking the lead three and a-half furlongs from home Grand Meteor won the Crescent Handicap easily in smart time. The best backed were Grand Meteor (£lB6 10/- and £159 10/-), Capri (£134 10/- and £144 10/-) and Golden Miller (£ll9 and £139). Capricorn broke at the start and interfered with Jesse Owens and Direct Bell who took no part in the race. Drumbunnif made the pace from Grand Meteor, Gold Valley and Sinbad. At the mile Drumbunnif was just showing from Grand Meteor, Sinbad, Gold Valley and Happy Mom. Golden Miller had broken and lost a good deal of ground. The order changed little until passing the half-mile where Grand Meteor took charge from Drumbunnif, Happy Mom, Bright Voyage and Master Potts. The order was the same into the straight, but Grand Meteor was always doing best to beat Bright Voyage by a length and a-half. Master Potts was a head away then Drumbunnif, Capri and’ Sinbad. Grand Meteor was an easy winner over the final three furlongs and was confidently handled. Bright Voyage came home strongly under a hard drive and so did Master Potts. Drumbunnif failed to stay. Happy Mom finished with a buckled wheel and was unlucky.

TRAVIS MEMORIAL Jenny’s Guy, the win favourite, trotted a fine race to win the Travis Memorial Handicap from the second fancy Blue Logan. Jenny’s Guy (£BO 10/- and £73 10/-), Blue Logan (£5l 10/- and £77 10/-) and Appomatox (£5O and £72 10/-) monopolized a poor betting race. Betty Drusus and Dalaruan broke early, Jenny’s Guy, Traveltone, Appomatox and Fair Voyage leading through the straight from Traveltone and Anna’s Voyage. At the mile post Jenny’s Guy was closely attended by Appomatox, Blue Logan, Traveltone, Fair Voyage and Anna’s Voyage, the rest being out of the contest. Approaching the five-furlong post Traveltone broke and Jenny’s Guy carried on from Blue Logan, Fair Voyage, Appomatox and Anna’s Voyage. Into the straight Jenny’s Guy and Fair Voyage together were two lengths clear of Blue Logan, then coming Anna’s Voyage, Appomatox and Traveltone. Jenny’s Guy did not have to do her best to beat Blue Logan by two lengths, Fair Voyage three lengths away followed by Anna’s Voyage, Traveltone and Appomatox. Jenny’s Guy trotted steadily all the way and deserved her win which was popular. Blue Logan went'more steadily than usual and Fair Voyage also trotted steadily. Anna’s Voyage found the handicap just too big and the rest did not trot at all steadily. TAKITIMU HANDICAP Seascape scored a well-deserved victory in the Takitimu Handicap; she has been racing very consistently. Vice Regal (£254 10/- and £172 10/-), Seascape (£149 and £157) and the coupled Iron Duke and Crown Peak (£ll7 10/and £123) were the favourites. Samara, Fortune King and Capricorn were badly away, Iron Duke leading away from Vice Regal, Tour and Seascape. Fransol moved up fast and at the six-furlong peg was showing out from Vice Regal, Iron Duke, Seascape, Guy Nut and Gay Avon. With half a mile to go positions changed and Iron Duke and Seascape together were clear from Fransol, Guy Nut .and Vice Regal who was now beaten. The order was the same at the home turn where Seascape left Iron Duke and came on to beat Guy Nut by three-quarters of a length. Iron Duke was two lengths away then Vice Regal and Fransol. Seascape was well handled by D. M. .Kerr and won well in 2.53 1-5 from a

3.5 mark. Guy Nut is a promising sort by Adioo Guy-Golden Nut. Iron Duke had every chance and so did Vice Regal. The others were well beaten. MEMBERS’ HANDICAP The meeting concluded with a close finish in the Members’ Handicap and a popular win for Silver Laddie and his owner. The coupled Mountain Lad and Tritoma (£326 10/- and £279 10/-), Prince Charles (£317 and £223 10/-) and Norma Grattan (£175 10/and £165) were the popular selections. Tritoma and Labour Chimes made mistakes early, Guywin showing out from Mountain Lad, Silver Laddie and Prince Charles. With half a mile covered Guy win was just showing from Silver Laddie, Mountain Lad, Tritoma, Prince Charles and Walter Gay. Silver Laddie went up to Guywin in the back, their nearest attendants being Mountain Lad, Tritoma, and Prince Charles. Silver Laddie took charge three furlongs from home and led into the straight from Guywin, . Walter Gay, Prince Charles and Tritoma. In a fine race home Silver Laddie stayed on to beat Guywin by three-quarters of a length. Prince Charles was half a length away, then Walter Gay, Tritoma and Mountain Lad. Silver Laddie for once left the mark correctly and showing a good turn oi speed won well in 2.50 2-5 from a 2.58 mark. He was given a fine welcome, despite being at long odds. Guywin was well placed all the way and fought on well. So did Prince Charles who was giving the leaders a fair start over the final half-mile. Tritoma was a little unlucky.
