BLUFF

AWARUA BOATING CLUB ANNUAL MEETING At the annual meeting of the Awarua Boating Club the president (Mr A. E. Budd) presided. ~ In extending a welcome, Mr Buda expressed pleasure at seeing several new members present. , The annual report stated:— During the year 10 active and two honorary members were enrolled. The present state of the club’s membership is as follows: Ten life, 38 active, three honorary. . Unfortunately five active members have left Bluff, O. Wares to Wellington, D. Robins to Dunedin, G. Barton to Stewart Island, B. Dixon to Gore, and N. Brough to Australia. With these gone we appeal to members to enrol others for the coming season. The boathouse is in good order with the exception of the dressing shed, which requires some repairing. The staging put down under direction of the captain (W. Aitken) is a strong structure and should last for many years. The purchase of oars has again been a big item and further purchases will be necessary. We would recommend considering the adoption of swivels in stead of fixed poppet, as it has been found the latter causes numerous breakages in rough water. The Grey Racer which was holed last season was very well repaired by Mr B. Brown. Good work has been done by the captain in the off season and by opening day everything will be in good order. Our club was again successful at regattas and was represented at the New Zealand championship regatta at Akaroa in the maiden and junior classes, both of which events were won by Bluff crews. We are fortunate in having so many members who are prepared to travel to distant regattas. It is pleasing to record that the club fours events was finalized, this being the first time for two years, the rough weather being the cause of postponement in other cases. The cup presented by Mr T. West, sen., for club pairs has not been competed for. In order to meet the expense of sending crews to Akaroa a special drive for funds was made and it is pleasing to report that the success was such that after paying members’ expenses we were able to transfer the sum of £l6 to our general account. There was an increase for the season of £1 10/- in subscriptions and a decrease of £3 12/- in donations. Social occasions showed a profit of £l3 10/-, and net proceeds from regattas a decrease of £26. Starting the season with a debit balance of £5 10/8, after paying all expenses to the extent of £llB 15,1, there remains a credit balance of £23 10/-. Last opening day was held on October 3. The Pipe Band was in attendance and added to the enjoyment of a successful function. A. victory ball was held on August 16 and it also was very successful. At this dance presentations of trophies and medals were made to the winning crews. We have to thank Dr A. R. Ross, Messrs C. Beaton, J. D. Ballantyne and W. B. Dixon, for cash donations and Mesdames W. P. Butler, J. McQuarrie and J. Dawson, Messrs J. T. Martin, O. F. Metzger, A. Crockett, A. Sutherland, W. Wong, W. A. Johnsen, Single Profit Stores, W. H. Johnston and Co., Nichol Bros., and John Mill and Co. for donations of goods, prizes, etc. Thanks are due to our delegates to the Southland Rowing Association, captain and deputy-captain, caretakers, auditor, local Press correspondents and supporters. We congratulate members who carried our colours to the front at Akaroa and also members chosen to represent Southland in the interprovincial eights at Wellington and at Port Chalmers for the Edmond Shield. We especially desire to express our appreciation to Mesdames A. E. Budd, B. Johnson, W. Doyle, C. Hunter, L. J. Morrison, A. S. Morrisson and Miss E. Prestonj without whom our street days would not have been so successful.” HEALTHY CREDIT BALANCE In moving the adoption of the report and balance sheet, the chairman said it was gratifying to find that the club had changed its debit balance into a healthy credit balance. He congratulated the crews successful at the New Zealand championships, their performances justifying the confidence in which they were held by the club. The latter was naturally proud of the victories gained. The speaker urged members to again give of their best in the coming season, the success of which depended on their efforts. The report and balance-sheet were adopted. A letter was read from A. M. Miller, Port Chalmers, in which it was stated the price of a set of riggers for a four would be £7 15/-. The honorary auditor (Mr R. N. Porter) wrote expressing his appreciation of the highly capable manner in which the secretary (Mr A. S. Morrison) had carried out his work, the balance-sheet being a model of its kind. A donation of caps for the winning crew in the club fours was made by Mr W. Kay. Subscriptions were fixed at 10/- and Saturday next decided on for opening day, the function to begin at 2.30 p.m. The election of office-bearers resulted as follows:—Patron, the Hon. T. F.
