ANNUAL SPORTS MEETING

GIRLS’ HIGH SCHOOL KEEN COMPETITION AND BIG ENTRIES Conditions were ideal yesterday for the annual athletic sports meeting of the Southland Girls’ High School. The sun shone brightly throughout the afternoon and the track at Rugby Park, where the meeting was held, was in excellent order. Success for the fixture was assured by the big entries for all events, the keen competition between the four houses —Gray, Macalister, Btrang and Galloway—and the efficient manner in which the programme was conducted by the sports instructor (Mr J. Page) and the members of the teaching staff. One of the outstanding performances of the day was that of Joan Dixon, who won the senior championship A splendid all-round athlete, she won all of the

senior championship events—and won them comparatively easily—to secure 15 points. Joy Lyons, who was runnerup with seven points, also showed promise as a runner. The junior championship was won by Ruth Dowden, another promising young athlete, with 15 points. Una Jenkin was runner-up with nine points. The inter-house competition caused the customary enthusiasm among the pupils and resulted in an easy win for Gray House with 126 points. Macalister House was next with 70 J points There was a big attendance of parents, friends and former pupils. Afternoon tea was provided during the afternoon.
