RUSSIAN SHIPPING An article in the Svenska Pressen announces that in future the Soviet Government, which in the past has extensively chartered British and Scandinavian tonnage, will employ its own ships. The Soviet mercantile fleet has now grown to such pro-

portions that Russia is enabled seriously to compete in the world’s freight markets. A big number of modern motor-vessels is .at present under construction in Russian shipyards, and it is estimated that the present tonnage will be doubled by 1939. ROMANTIC ISLAND TRADE Recently, in addition to the Triona and Triaster, which are regularly employed carrying phosphatic rock from Ocean Island and Nauru, several other ships—the Willandra, Silksworth, and Thistlebank—have been employed. This little known but romantic trade is of vital importance to Australia and New Zealand, where artificial fertilizers are used so extensively. And the fact that an unprecedented number of ships is coming to Melbourne shows that the trade is expanding (says an exchange). The phosphates in these islands is exploited by British Phosphate Commissioners, a company which embodies British, Australian and New Zealand interests. The Triona and Triaster are remarkable for their yacht shaped bows. Powerful windlasses are built in the stems, and these and the overhanging bows enable the ships to lift the moorings, which are placed in about 180 fathoms of water off shore. These motor-ships, which carry about 40 passengers—mostly company officials—have British officers, Filipino seamen and engineers, and Chinese cooks.
