“REMEDY” CAUSES 14 DEATHS

AMERICAN CHEMICAL PREPARATION TRAGIC REFUTATION OF MEDICAL OPINION (United Press Assn.—Telegraph Copyright) (Received October 20, 7.45 p.m.) CHICAGO, October 19. The American Medical Association has disclosed that nine out of 10 persons at Tulsa (Oklahoma), to whom were administered what is claimed to be an extremely effective remedy, have died.

The preparation used at Tulsa is called elixir sulfanilamide and is used principally for blood infections. Theie were also five other deaths elsewhere, and 375 shipments of the preparation which have been sent to other parts cf the country, are being recalled. The association, without condemning sulfanilamide, which has been hailed by the medical world, says: “This tragic experience should be a final warning to physicians against the prescribing and administering of semi-secret preparations which are not standardized.” The Federal Government has ordered the seizure of all sulfanilamide throughout the country, and has advised the Canadian authorities to act similarly.
