THE CURRAGH

The Wellington Racing Club’s meeting opens at Trentham tomorrow. Nominations for the minor events at the Canterbury Jockey Club’s meeting elose on Friday. The grey gelding by Last DartObsono mare in R. E. McLellan’s team has been named Grey Seal. C. T. Wilson will ride Queen of Song at Trentham tomorrow and will also pilot Kinnoull and Grey Honour.

Argentic is to start at Trentham tomorrow and will be ridden by A. Messervy, who won on him when he last visited Trentham.

Padishah evidently went amiss at Masterton last week as he has been withdrawn from his engagements at the New Zealand Cup meeting.

Alma will be ridden by A. E. Didham at Gore on Saturday and his apprentice, P. Spratt, will be on Counterflight, Daring Deed and Gambler’s Luck.

The apprentice horseman E. Baker has returned to F. W. Ellis’s stable and was riding work on the track yesterday. He has made a good recovery from his recent illness.

Francolin, dam of the speedy two-year-old Ortyx, has foaled a chestnut filly to Nigger Minstrel. The filly is closely related to Ceme Abbas, whose dam, Monoxide, is a half-sister to Francolin.

Silver Ring is to race at Rangiora on Monday and will be ridden by his old pilot A. E. Ellis, who will return south after the second day’s racing at Trentham and will have a mount in five of the six galloping events.

The Gainsborough sire Gainscourt died at the stud of Mr H. Hassall, Riverslea, Hastings, a few days ago. He was 16 years old. Gainscourt sired some good winners, including Oratory, Tiger Gain, Courtega, Entheos, Gainsfid, Armacourt and Blue Boy.

In addition to Silver Ring, New Zealand Cup candidates engaged at Motukarara are Argentic, Cottingham, Queen of Song, Cerne Abbas, Waitaka, Last Refrain, Miracle, Wild Career, Fiord, Dropped Catch, Davolo and Ponty.

B. H. Morris has been engaged to ride Hunting Cat, Lord Cavendish, Big Dock, Great Hope, Russian Ballet and The Bigot tomorrow. S. Wilson will ride Laughing Lass, C. G. Goulsbro Wagner, H. N. Wiggins Quadroon and H. J. Callahan Joviality.

Saxophone, by Nigger Minstrel, has produced a fine filly foal to Gustavo at the Salisbury stud. Mr L. C. Hazlett now has four generations of this family running in his paddocks, Sister Radius, Compression, Saxophone and her filly foal.

L. J. Ellis, who will ride Royal Chief in the Trentham Stakes next Saturday, has been in the money in every one of the four previous contests. In 1933 he won on Southdown, in 1934 he was third on the favourite Sporting Blood, in 1936 (summer) he was second on the favourite Kinnoull, and in 1936 (spring) he won again on the favourite Gallio.

Although he was kept in training during the winter months so that he would be in forward order for the New Zealand Trotting Cup meeting, Trampfast has been returned to the paddock and it has been decided to retire him from racing. Mr W. T. Lowe reached this decision following the appearance of the limits for the Dominion Handicap and other trotters races on the Metropolitan Trotting Club’s November programme.

Messrs G. Kain and G. Fulton, who bred Normal, winner of the £lOOO Debutante Stakes at Caulfield on October 9, have a brother to Normal to offer at the next yearling sales at Trentham. He is stated to be better grown, and has more length than his relative, and no doubt will attract marked attention in the ring. The dam, Knocklynn, recently produced a colt brother to this pair, all three being by Lord Warden.

Miracle, Silver Streak, Gueen of Song, and Top Row were shipped to Wellington on Monday night, and the following horses were expected to go north last night:—Wild Chase, Paper Slipper, Guinea Fowl, Lazybones, Nightdress, Mulatto, Godfrey, Argentic, Screamer Redolent, Grey Honour, Kinnoull, Rebel Lad, Araboa and Ortyx, Silver Sight, Dropped Catch, Great Baby, and Wild Career will not make the trip, and there is a doubt whether Chaste will go as she is suffering from an enlarged knee caused through hitting the last fence at Washdyke on Saturday.

A special train stopping at Woodlands, Edendale and Mataura only will leave Invercargill for the Gore racecourse on Saturday, October 23 at 10.30 a.m. returning leaving the Gore racecourse at 5.35 p.m. A train will also leave the racecourse at 6.30 p.m. for Invercargill, stopping where required. On Monday, October 25, for the second day of the races, a special train stopping where required, will leave Invercargill for Gore at 10.10 a.m., while a fast nonstop train will leave for the racecourse at 11.0 a.m. A fast non-stop train will return to Invercargill shortly after the finish of the last race, while stopping trains will leave the racecourse at 6.0 p.m. and 6.35 p.m. for Invercargill.

The following are the entries for the Auckland Cup, £2500 and gold cup valued at £5O (two miles) —Cuddle, Boomerang, Might, Parquet, Lady Graceful, Parry, Shy, Valamito, Auto sweep, Sinking Fund, Flood Tide, Lowenberg, Bold Step, Catalogue, Besiege, Kelly, Tybalt, Buster Brown, The Buzzer, Oratory, Silver Streak, King Rey, Knight of Australia, Middle, Mazir, Small Boy, Greek Shepherd, Wild Chase, Nightdress, Lazybones, Fersen, Mahutai, Silver Ring, Willie Win, Argentic, Padishah, Quadroon,

INVERCARGILL TRACK NOTES YESTERDAY’S WORK The course proper at Invercargill, adjacent to the rails, was again open yesterday for fast work when the candidates for Gore were given their semifinal gallops. The going was ideal, but little outstanding in the way of speed was witnessed, although some smart performances were registered. Sailing Lady (G. Barclay) was first to work and she ran six furlongs in 1.19 3-5. There is nothing wrong with her condition at this stage. Boswell (R. Humphries) and Waitoru (G. Barclay) slipped over five furlongs in 1.5 4-5 and could have done better. They are a promising pair of maidens. Pesetas (E. Baker) and Mona's Song (W. Ellis) registered 1.19 4-5 for six furlongs, the first four in 0.51 2-5 and the last four in 0.54 1-5. Mona’s Song has done well since being brought in. Burwood (C. Humphries) jumped oft at the seven-furlong peg and was picked up by Bonazel (L. Strathearn) at the five-furlong post. Burwood ran the distance in 1.33 3-5; a smart gallop. Bonazel galloped freely all the way., Paladino (G. Barclay) and a gelding by Lord Warden-Watchful in R. E. McLellan’s stable were sent half a mile, running the last three in 0.38. For his size Paladino moves well. The maiden performer is a useful-looking sort. Amelita (E. Baker) and Galleon (W. Ellis) finished clear of Ocean Singer (C. Ward) at the end of a mile done in 1.49. Ocean Singer tailed off early and could not make up the leeway. Amelita and Galleon both went well. Grey Seal (R. Humphries), Baitruin (G. Barclay) and Triple Cone (J. O’Connor) ran half a mile in 0.50 and this was a good gallop. Baitruin was giving his companions a start into the straight, but finished on solidly and just beat Grey Seal on the post. Ardchoille (J. A. Rowland) had Johnny (C. Ward) as a companion over a mile. There was little pace on early, the first four furlongs taking 0.59 2-5 and the six 1.26 1-5. With the pace on from here they ran the last half-mile in 0.53 3-5 to register 1.53 1-5 for the full journey. They could have done a good deal better. Coxcomb (W. Ellis) was responsible for a splendid effort when he ran a mile in 1.48. He came home solidly with Kylemuir (E. Baker), who picked him up at the six furlongs. The black gelding is in good condition. Trebleack (G. Barclay) and Milford (R. Humphries) also went a mile. The first half took 0.57 1-5, the six 1.23 and the full distance in 1.48 2-5, the last six in 1.19 1-5 and the last four in 0.51 1-5. Both horses look well and are hitting out freely on the tracks.. Fog Peak (E. Leckie) and the Weathervane-Gold Silk gelding (J. O’Connor) left five furlongs behind in 1.5. Fog Peak is not a good track worker, but his companion is improving with every gallop. Irish Birdcatcher (E. Baker), who has had an easy time for a few days, ran six furlongs in 1.23 1-5, the last four in 0.55 1-5. He was keen to go March (J. O’Connor) had little difficulty in running five furlongs in 1.3 1-5. This horse has done very well since racing at Wingatui and should race prominently in the near future. CAULFIELD CUP FIELDS FOR TODAY Final acceptors for the Caulfield Cup (£6500, one mile and a-half) to be run to-

The weather and track conditions at Wingatui yesterday morning were ideal for training operations, and a number of horses engaged at the Gore meeting was galloped (writes “St. .Clair”). The course proper, next the rails, was open for fast work, and the going fast. Grand Finale was going much better than Pink Del at the end of six furlongs in .1 18. Dissemble, who looks very well just now, ran half a mile in 0.49 1-5, a really good gallop, that will bring her into demand for the open sprint handicap at Gore on Saturday. Lord Nuffield appeared to be doing it better over the last furlong of six than Janet Gaynor in 1.19 1-5. Linguist beat Daring Deed over seven furlongs in 1.31. Great Pal was not hurried over the first furlong of six run on the tan-plough track in 1.21. Hanlon beat Gambler’s Luck over six furlongs on the same track in 1.22 2-5. Gold Boa was going easily throughout a six furlong spin on the course proper in 1.21, but appeared to be making a noise as she finished. High Glee was under restraint over the last furlong, and then beat Night Wings at the end of six in 1.18 1-5, the last three furlongs taking 0.39 1-5. Gipsy Fair flew over the first four furlongs along the back in 0.48 3-5, but it took her 1.32 4-5 to complete seven furlongs. Valmarch had the best of a half-mile sprint with Gusterina in 0.48 3-5, end is now a much better horse than when he raced at Ashburton and Wingatui. Gay Vixen was sent five furlongs, but only had pace on down the straight.
