GOSSIP FROM THE STUDIOS

Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer are planning “Baby Broadway Melody of 1938,” a musical film with an all-juvenile cast, burlesquing its grown-up prototype. John W. Considine, jun, will produce.

To stimulate business, a German theatre manager advertised a special picture and offered 500 marks to any patron who didn’t like it. The house was packed but no one claimed the money. The picture was a film dealing with Herr Hitler.

“You and Me,” the Paramount film in which Sylvia Sidney and George Raft were to have been co-starred, has again been shelved. Miss Sidney will return to the stage for a time while Raft goes into “Argentine Love,” with Ida Lupino and Dorothy Lamour.

About a year ago Mischa Auer was only known in small roles on the screen, but such was his quick rise to popularity that he is at the moment working in four films simultaneously. One of his latest is “It’s All Yours,” with Madeleine Carroll and Francis Lederer.

Now that Paul Muni has definitely decided not to play in Warners’ “Panama Canal,” the leading role has been given to Claude Rains. He will play the character of General Gorgas, the American surgeon who conquered the outbreak of yellow fever during the construction of the canal.

Karen Morley recently arrived in London with her husband, the director, Charles Vidor. One of the cleverest character players on the screen, Karen Morley intended to be a doctor of medicine. But at 19 she found pathology less exciting than the psychopathic conditions prevalent on Broadway, and became an actress. Her first hit in films was in “Inspiration,” and later she distinguished herself in “Gabriel over the White House.” She is visiting Budapest, the original home of her husband.
