CLOCK ON POST OFFICE

COUNCIL TO DECIDE NEW SITUATION SOUTH AFRICAN MEMORIAL SUGGESTED The resting-place of the Post Office clock is not certain. When the new Post Office is finished the clock will not be installed in the building, and according to the Postmaster-General (the Hoh. F. Jones) it will fall to the Invercargill City Council to provide accommodation for it. Councillors discussed the fate of the clock at the meeting of the council last evening and a suggestion was made by the Mayor that it could be erected on the South African war memorial. The following letter was received from the Postmaster-General: “Referring to the request made for the reerection of the present post office clock on the new office to be built at Invercargill, I have looked into the matter and find that the clock was originally supplied by my department while your council contributed the sum of £250 towards the cost of the chiming apparatus. For your information, the provision of public clocks is not now considered to be a function of my department, and in many cases recently where new buildings have been erected the clock from the old building has been handed over to the council for disposal. I have decided that the clock at Invercargill will not be installed in the new building, and I shall be glad to learn in due course whether your council is prepared to take it over for re-erection at some suitable point.” “I suppose we will have to build a tower for it somewhere,” said Cr G. J. Reed. The Mayor said he thought the South African soldiers’ memorial at the comer of Dee and Tay streets would be a good place to put it. There should be room for it between the four pillars, he said. Cr A. Scott said he did not think there was enough room at present in the memorial, but it could be altered to house the clock. On the motion of Cr Reed, seconded by Cr Scott, it was decided to refer the matter to the finance committee.
