MISS BATTEN AT BATAVIA

First Lap Of Flight To England TIMOR SEA CROSSED FROM DARWIN . (United Press Assn. —Telegraph Copyright) (Received October 20, 12.25 a.m.) BATAVIA, October 19. Miss Jean Batten, who is attempting to break the solo record from Australia to England, arrived at Batavia from Darwin at 4.45 p.m. (local time) — 9.15 a.m. (Greenwich mean time). Miss Batten took off from Darwin at 6 a.m. (local time). The Administrator (Colonel C. R. Abbott) and his family, with whom she stayed while at Darwin, and a number of well-wishers hade her farewell. Asked whether she was glad to be starting, Miss Batten replied: “Yes, but not as glad as I will be when I turn for home.” The floods in Victoria disorganized the Australian land lines, and no word was received in Sydney about the time of Miss Batten’s departure from Darwin, but a cable from Koepang announced that she passed over there at 8.10 a.m. (local time). BROADBENT DELAYED BY FOG ATTEMPT ON OUTWARD RECORD LONDON, October 18. Fog prevented Mr H. F. Broadbent, holder of the record that Miss Batten hopes to break, departing from Hanworth in an attempt to beat her Eng-land-Australia record. He says he hopes to go this week, possibly on Tuesday or Wednesday. His departure, however, depends upon the weather. Mr Broadbent is using the machine with which he created his record for the flight from Australia to England.
