ASSURANCE GIVEN BY PRIME MINISTER MELBOURNE, October 19. The Federal Prime Minister (Mr J. A. Lyons), broadcasting from Bendigo, said: “I solemnly declare that my Government’s policy never has included and never will include conscription. There will be no conscription while my Government is in office. I give you that definite assurance.” This was the Prime Minister’s reply to allegations by Labour that the Federal Government was committed to a policy of conscription. Replying to Mr Lyons at Melbourne, thg Leader ol the Opposition (Mr J. Curtin) said no reliance could be placed on the Prime Minister’s declarations. He added that if war broke out there would be conscription overnight.
