A GREAT GOAL

BRAND’S DROP-KICKING The best dropped goal I ever saw was by G. Brand, the South African full-back, against England at ' Twickenham, in 1932 (writes “Sentinel” in The Morning Post. England). He got the ball a yard or so inside the English half, and about the same distance from the east touchline. Conditions were wet and greasy, and it was a great surprise to see him try a drop at goal. The ball rose to a tremendous height, actually passing over the cross-bar level with the top of the posts, and it pitched on the dead-ball line. The carry was found to 84 yards—exactly the same length as a gigantic drop-kick by the famous H. B. Tristram at Oxford, which I personally assisted in measuring. A truly memorable feat, and I agreed with a Scottish international sitting next to me, who thought it worth ten points at least. I am no laudator temporis acti, but am bound to say that reliable and long drop-kicking is not seen nearly as often today as in the late eigthies and nineties.
