GENERAL NOTES The motor-vessel Tamatea sailed with passengers and cargo for Milford Sound at noon yesterday. The Union Company’s motor-vessel Waiana, which is discharging and loading general cargo at Bluff, is expected to finish working this afternoon and sail for Dunedin. The schooner Scout sailed with general cargo for Stewart Island at 1 pan. yesterday. The Port Line’s motor-ship Port Huon, which left Liverpool on August 10, has arrived at Auckland. She is due at Wellington on Monday. The New Zealand Shipping Company's steamer Tongariro, which left London on September 11, is now to call at Auckland as well as Dunedin, Lyttelton and New Plymouth. She is due at Dunedin on October 20. Dominion-bound from Vancouver, the Union Company’s motor-ship Aorangi is not now expected at Auckland till September 20. The New Zealand Shipping Company has received advice that the Rangitata, which left Wellington on August 26 for London, arrived at Panama on September 13. The Bank Line motor-ship Myrtlebank left Nauru Island on September 7 with phosphates for Lyttelton and Dunedin. She is due at Lyttelton tomorrow and at Ravensboume on September 21. NEW BEEF CHAMBERS A new process for preventing the formation of ice crystals in chilled beef has been developed in the Argentine. An alternating electric current was run through the beef in cool storage for certain periods each day by inserting electrodes near the hock. The current ran down the spinal column, preserving the tissues from destruction by ice crystals, but the heat generated was not sufficient to raise the temperature of the cool chamber itself.
