DEATH OF GIANT TORTOISE

LOSS TO AUCKLAND ZOO

(United Press Association)

AUCKLAND, September 17.

Tragedy occurred at the Auckland Zoo when the death took place of a giant tortoise which was imported last January and which had proved to be one of the institution’s most popular exhibits.

Auckland’s climate had proved too severe for this reptile from the tropical latitudes of Seychelles Islands. Although the age of the tortoise was not known it was considered to be about 35 or 40 years old. It was provided with speci-ally-heated quarters at night throughout the winter but its health gradually failed and no efforts by its keepers could bring about an improvement.
