INSPECTIONS OF PRISONS

SIR SAMUEL HOARE’S VISIT

(British Official Wireless)

(Received September 17, 5.5 p.m.) RUGBY, September 16.

Sir Samuel Hoare, continuing his visits to prisons, flew yesterday from Norfolk to Devonshire and inspected the Dartmoor convict prison. He found the prison comparatively empty, for the present population of Dartmoor is less than 300—one of the lowest figures on record. Thirty years ago there were 1200 prisoners there. Sir Samuel Hoare had several talks with the convicts and examined their work, food, exercise and cells He also inspected and addressed a parade of prison officials.
