“SCARE STORY” DENIED
ITALIAN WARNING TO POWERS
INTERFERENCE IN MEDITERRANEAN
(United Press Assn.—Telegraph Copyright)
(Received September 18, 1.10 a.m.) LONDON, September 17.
Britain was this morning regaled with another scare story that Italy had warned Britain and France not to interfere in the Mediterranean with Italian shipping or warships of any category.
Inquiries by the Associated Press at Whitehall discredit the story. It is pointed out that there is nothing in the Nyon agreement directed against the lawful movements of ships and warships. Britain does not propose to reply to Italy’s rejection of participation with the Nyon Powers but she remains firm in her intention to carry out the plan though willing to consider any suggestions Signor Mussolini cares to offer.
Rome officially denies that any warning has been addressed to Britain and France and states the report is without foundation.
