CHINESE REFUGEES.—Junks laden with Chinese refugees sailing up the Whangpoo River towards Shanghai soon after the outbreak of hostilities. The refugees came from the Chinese settlements round the mouth of the river, which were evacuated as soon as the Japanese began to attack the forts at Paoshan and Woosung.
