HEALTH INSURANCE SCHEME

SUPPORT FROM COUNTIES ASSOCIATION

The principle of a national health insurance scheme was supported by the annual conference of the New Zealand Counties’ Association, which asked that local bodies be given an opportunity to express their views before a parliamentary committee, according to a report made by Cr W. M. Norman, the Southland County Council’s representative at the conference, to a meeting of the council yesterday. The report stated: — “The chairman of the association reported that a meeting of delegates from the Municipal Association, Hospitals Association and the Counties Association had conferred on the question of hospital rating and the following decisions were arrived at. (a) That the Government be urged to promote a compulsory national health insurance scheme for medical, dental and hospital treatment. (b) That the financing of this scheme be met by compulsory contributions from employers and employees, subsidized by the Government and that provision be made for the inclusion of workers on their own account farmers and small business men.
