DERBY PLANS FOR AJAX

LEFT TO TRAINER

YOUNGSTER HAS GOOD RECORD Ajax’s Sydney programme is still in doubt. He may run in the Rosehill Guineas, or he might not start until the Derby. One of Ajax’s part-owners, Mr E. L. Baillieu, said recently that the colt’s campaign was left entirely in the hands of the trainer, Frank Musgrave. “He knows what is needed,” said Mr Baillieu, “and he should be the best judge.” Ajax has done well since his arrival at Randwick, and he continues to do a fair amount of solid work. Mr Baillieu does not consider Ajax will have any difficulty in running the mile and a-half in the A.J.C. Derby. He considers that the chestnut is an outstanding colt and that his breeding says he will run a journey. “Heroic was a stayer, and Ajax's maternal lines are stout in staying blood,” he added. “Prince Galahad, the sire of the colt’s dam, Medmenham. is a sire of stayers, and he is by the best sire of his day, Prince Palatine, while Lemberg, Sainfoin and St. Simon horses, close up in Ajax’s pedigree, were all great performers over a journey.” rxjax has run seven times for five wins, a second and once unplaced, and £6330 in stakes. It is not too much to say that Ajax should never have been beaten, says a Melbourne writer. His defeats at Flemington in the autumn in the Sires’ Produce Stakes and Ascotvale Stakes were caused by hanging off the course, and he proved that he was superior to the horses which finished m iront of him on those occasions bv decisively turning the tables at Randwick in the Sires’ Produce Stakes and Champagne Stakes. The greatest stake winner at present racing on the Australian turf is Lough Neagh, with a few hundreds more than £lB,OOO, but if Ajax wins the two Derbies and the Caulfield Guineas, his stake winnings will amount to £15,620, and before his three-year-old days are over he will probably have topped the £20,000 mark.
