N.Z. TROTTING CUP BIG NOMINATION CERTAIN The programme for the New Zealand Metropolitan Trotting Club’s spring meeting has been published and many owners have closely studied the conditions for the New Zealand Cup (says The Press, Christchurch). The general opinion is that the trotting authorities have not made the best use of the material available and in allowing 4.26 class horses to start in a race that is supposed to be confined to those in the first flight, it has committed a grave error. A big nomination is a certainty; but in the conditions of the race is a clause which gives the committee power to refuse the acceptance of any horse and to return any fees that might have been paid. The idea is hardly a good one and owners and trainers are anxious to know whether the committee is in a position to judge the true merits of horses nominated.

At the present time it would be a bold adventurer who would debar any of the horses now eligible, and the Metropolitan Club has had one rather unhappy experience in this matter. When Walla Walla was brought from Australia in 1936 he was set to meet what appeared to be the best field of pacers that could be got together in New Zealand. The field included Roi I’Or who, however, finished last in the first race over a mile, and the committee considered that he was not the class required, and substituted Lindbergh for him in the second distance, a mile and a-half. The race was a fiasco; but on the same day Roi l’Or established a New Zealand record of 4.14 1-5 for two miles and was narrowly beaten by Auburn Lad. Had Roi l’Or competed against Walla Walla and Harold Logan a very different story might have had to be written. In debarring any qualified horse there is a risk of grave injustice being done.
