DAIRY MARKETING SCHEME

CRITICISM OF INCREASE IN FREIGHT RATES

(From Our Parliamentary Reporter) WELLINGTON, September 16. An increase in the freight rates for the carriage of New Zealand produce to the United Kingdom was referred to by the Leader of the Opposition (the Hon. Adam Hamilton) when discussing the dairy marketing scheme during the Address-in-Reply debate in

the House of Representatives tonight. The increase, he said, was due to the fact that the cost of handling cargo on New Zealand wharves was the highest in the world. Great credit, said Mr Hamilton, was being taken by the Government for the dairy marketing scheme but it was not initiated by the Minister of Marketing (the Hon. W. Nash) or by the Government. The scheme was lying in the office of the Dairy Board before the Government came into office. The board had decided to adopt the scheme. Mr Nash: That is not true. Mr Hamilton: My information is from quite a reliable source. The board, said Mr Hamilton, had its London manager, Mr H. E. Davis, out from England to initiate the scheme. The board intended to do it a different way. It was not going to have a guarantee system but a marketing system only. Mr Davis came out to the Dominion to initiate the scheme when the Government came into office. The Minister of Finance had gone to London to fix up freight agreements with shipping companies and there had been an increase of 2/ per cent. That was the first time there had been an increase. “I am quite sure” said Mr Hamilton “that there are some people in this country who could have gone to London and made that agreement without an increase. The Australian freight charges are all down except in the case of butter. The reason for the increase so far as New Zealand is concerned is that the working costs on the wharves in this country are the highest in the world. There is a field where the Minister might perhaps try to bring down costs. I think Auckland is the chief sinner in this connection.”
