MARRIAGE AT POINT OF REVOLVER
AMERICAN’S ADVENTURE IN PERU WASHINGTON, September 15. Lewis Clarkson, a former American business man in Peru, has asked a Washington court to annul his marriage with a Peruvian woman on the ground of being compelled to assent to the wedding by a former President of Peru (Senor Leguia), who was her lover.
Clarkson’s brief alleged that an armed guard escorted him to the church, revolvers were pressed against his back and threats of accidental death were whispered in his ear. Clarkson averred that his previous relations with Senora Mercedes de la Quitana, the woman in question, had been wholly innocent and their relations after her marriage were wholly platonic; yet she had several children which Senor Leguia compelled Clarkson to register as his own. Senor Leguia was subsequently deposed by revolution and died in prison, after which Clarkson was permitted to leave Peru.
The sudden reappearance of Senora Mercedes de la Quitana, who in the interval was also reported to be dead, prompted Clarkson’s suit for annulment.
