GENERAL NOTES The motor-vessel Tamatea is due to sail today for Milford Sound with passengers and cargo for the Public Works Department. She is expected to leave Bluff at midday. The Union Company’s motor-vessel Waiana arrived late yesterday afternoon from Dunedin and began discharging general cargo at 6 p.m. She later loads for the north and sails on completion of working for Dunedin. The Union Steam Ship Company has received advice that the Rangitata arrived at Panama on September 13 and that the Rangitata sailed from Colon on September 14. From Wellington, the Melbourne Maru is due at Dunedin to continue discharge and loading. She is to sail on Monday for Lyttelton to complete. The motor-ship Ardenvohr is due at Dui> edin tomorrow to complete discharge of het cargo from Montreal. From New York, via northern ports, the Port Line vessel Port Brisbane is now due at Dunedin today to complete discharge and commence Homeward loading. She is to complete at Bluff arriving here on September 20, and will sail on September 22 for Wellington, Waikokopu and Auckland, and is to sail finally on October 2 for London and West Coast ports, via Montevideo. NEW AMERICAN LINERS The Bethlehem Ship Building Corporation’s tenders for the construction of three passenger and cargo steamers for the Panama Rail Road Company have been accepted by the United States Secretary of War. ' The figure quoted was 4,040,000 dollars each. The three are to replace the four existing units of the Government-owned fleet. Plans and specifications provide for the following characteristics:—Length, 486 ft; beam, 64ft; moulded depth, 38ft 6in; carrying capacity, 6000 tons dw., including 100,000 cubic feet of refrigerated space; 72 passenger state rooms, and speed of 1614 knots with vessel loaded to deep draught and using 75 per cent, of power. GERMAN SHIP BUILDING Merchant tonnage under construction or on order in German ship yards on April 1 last, according to figures published in a German contemporary, totalled 290 vessels of 1,083,053 tons gross, compared with 694,276 tons 12 months previously and 319.254 tons in 1935. Of the latest total, 93 ships of 616,650 tons are for foreign account, 43 of 411,150 tons being tankers. The Deutsche Werft. Hamburg, remains the busiest yard with 350,000 tons gross on order, while next comes the Bremer Vulkan. Vegesack (151,629 tons), the Deschimag's yards (121,090 tons)-. Fried. NEW HAPAG SHIPS The Hamburg-American Line has celebrated its ninetieth anniversary by placing orders for seven vessels, totalling about 38,700 tons gross. These ships, which are in addition to those recently ordered or the company’s services to the Far East and the west coast of South America, include the following:—A sister ship to the Wuppertal, a Diesel-electric vessel of about 7000 tons gross: five cargo vessels, three of 4500 tons gross each and two of 6300 tons gross each; and a passenger and cargo vessel of 5600 tons gross. In making the announcement Dr Walter Hoffman, head of the company, said that this decision marked the end of the long period during which the company had been unable to proceed with its normal construction programme.
