SOUTHLAND WOMEN’S CHAMPIONSHIPS TWO ROUNDS OF MATCH PLAY Conditions were again ideal for golf yesterday for the second day of the Southland women’s championships. Thv fairways of the Otatara course were in good order, and the greens were fast, especially in the afternoon. Two rounds of match play were completed as well as two bogey handicap events and a putting competition. Noteworthy in the afternoon round was the defeat by Miss P. McCarthy (Invercargill) of Mrs F. G. Hall-Jones (Invercargill), who has the lowest handicap in her club. Since she started to play only a few seasons ago Miss McCarthy has shown distinct promise. Last year she won the junior championship and this year she qualified for the senior division of the championship, although still a B grade player. Qualifying last in the B grade championship, Mrs Brandford (Winton) in the first round beat Mrs 0. A. B. Smith (Winton) in a splendid match. At one stage Mrs Smith was five up, but Mrs Brandford fought gamely, and carried the match to the 21st green. She beat Mrs Smart (Queen’s Park) in the semifinals, and will meet Miss I. Shand (Winton) in the final this morning. The results of the day’s play are as follows:— A GRADE CHAMPIONSHIP First Round Miss P. .Pilcher (Invercargill) beat Mrs C. C. Anderson (Invercargill). 6 and 4. Mrs Tansley (Invercargill) beat Mrs Carter (Queen’s Park), 3 and 2. Miss P. McCarthy (Invercargill) beat Mrs F. M. Corkill (Invercargill), 6 and 4. Mrs A. E. Smith (Invercargill) beat Mrs P. J. Israel (Invercargill), 5 and 4. Miss Claire Smith (Invercargill), Miss M. Stout (Invercargill), Mrs F. G. HallJones (Invercargill) and Mrs J. D. Speirs (Invercargill) had byes. Second Round Miss Smith beat Miss Pilcher, 5 and 4. Mrs Tansley beat Miss Stout, 2 up. Miss McCarthy beat Mrs Hall-Jones, 2 up. Mrs Speirs beat Mrs Smith, 6 and 5. In the semi-finals, which are to start at 9 o’clock this morning, Miss Smith plays Mrs Tansley, and Mrs Speirs plays Miss McCarthy. B GRADE CHAMPIONSHIP First Round Mrs Brandford (Winton) beat Mrs O. The results of the afternoon bogey handicap were:— A Grade.—Mrs Carter (Queen’s Park), 6 down. B Grade.—Mrs W. E. Hazlett (Invercargill) and Miss L. Douglas (Invercargill) tied with one down, and Miss Douglas won on the count back. PUTTING COMPETITION The winner of the putting competition on Wednesday was Mrs R. W. Wilson. A tie occurred in yesterday’s competition between Mesdames P. J. Israel and Carter, and they have yet to play off.
