FEWER FAT CATTLE YARDED RISE IN PRICE FOR SHEEP (United Press Association) DUNEDIN, September 15. There was a considerable drop in the number of fat cattle yarded for the Bumside stock sale today, the entry totalling 188 as against the average of 308 over the previous four sales. Prime and prime heavy bullocks composed the greater part of the yarding and, though the sale was inclined to be erratic, competition was keen and there was a general rise. Extra prime heavy ox made to £23 12/6, prime heavy £lB 2/6 to £2l 7/6. prime £l5 2/6 to £l7 12/6, and medium and light £9 7/6 to £l4 12/6. Extra prime heavy cows and heifers made to £l4 12/6, prime £lO 2/6 to £l2 17/6, medium £8 7/6 to £9 17/6 and light down to £5 7/6. Quality beef brought 40/- a 1001 b, with some choice butchers’ cattle bringing more than this. The market for cows and heifers averaged 40/- a 1001 b for best quality and about 35/- for poorer sorts. In the large yarding of store cattle good well-bred steers in forward condition realized to £lO 17/6, while cows and heifers brought to £6 10/- for best quality. The entry of 1160 fat sheep included some well-finished butchers’ wethers and, though the demand was erratic, outside competition kept the price level up to 2/- or 3/- in advance of late rates. Extra prime heavy wethers made to £2 18/-, prime heavy £2 9/- to £2 15/-, prime £2 3/- to £2 8/-, medium £1 15/- to £2 2/- and light and unfinished £1 6/6 to£l 14/-. Extra prime heavy ewes made to £2 8/-, prime heavy £2 to £2 3/6, prime £1 15/- to £1 18/- and medium and light £1 8/- to £1 12/6. Hoggets made from £1 1/- to £1 12/6, according to quality. The demand for fat pigs, of which 135 were yarded, was keen, baconers being 5/- up on late rates and porkers being firm. The 103 stores offered were difficult to quit and eased by 2/- to 3/a head.

THE ADDINGTON MARKETS GENERAL EASING IN PRICES (United Press Association) CHRISTCHURCH, September 15. Entries were larger at today’s Addington market and there was an easing tendency in some of the more important sections. Fat cattle, store sheep and light sheep in the fat pens were those affected.

Store Sheep.—There was a smaller entry, mostly backward ewes and lambs. The best of these, with a good percentage of lambs, sold at 20/-, other lots from 14/- to 16/-, all counted. Two-tooth ewes sold at 37/6. The market generally was easier. Fat Sheep.—There was a larger entry, but the bulk were of poorer quality. The latter class eased, due to some extent to the weaker tone of the wool market. Good sheep were a shade firmer. Best wethers made from 42/— to 53/10, good 36/- to 40/- and others down to 29/-. Best ewes made from 34/- to 46/7, good 28/- to 32/- and others down to 23/-.

Fat Cattle. —There were 520 penned, good steers being down by 20/- a head, heifers by 15/- and cows by 10/-. Best beef made from 37/- to 40/- and in a few cases 2/- more. Good made from 34/- to 36/- and inferior down to 26/a 1001 b. Extra prime heavy bullocks sold from £lB to £22 12/6, good heavy £l5 10/- to £l7 5/- and medium £l2 to £l4. Best heifers made from £ll to £l4 12/6, medium £7 5/- to £lO 10/-. Best cows made from £lO 10/te £l4 2/6, medium £7 to £lO. Vealers.—There was a good sale. Bunners made £3 17/6 to £8 16/-, vealers £2,15/- to £5 2/6, calves 18/— to £3 15/-.

Store cows and dairy cattle sold a shade better, but there were only a few forward.

Fat Pigs.—Both porkers and baconers met with the best sale for some years. Porkers sold from 38/6 to 59/6, average price a lb 8d to B£d, baconers £3 11/6 to £5 9/6; average price a lb 6|d to Bd.

Store Pigs.—There was an improvement in prices. Weaners made from 13/- to 21/-, stores 27/- to 35/-; sows in pig £4 to £5 12/6.
