GOLF SOUTHLAND WOMEN’S CHAMPIONSHIP QUALIFYING ROUNDS PLAYED The sixth annual Southland women’s golf championship opened yesterday at Otatara, players from the Alexandra, Gore, Winton, Queen’s Park and Invercargill clubs taking part. The weather was ideal for golf and the links were in good order. Qualifying rounds were played and in the second round Mrs J. D. Speirs (Invercargill) returned the lowest gross score—B4 for 18 holes. The honour of heading the qualifying list, however, went to Miss Claire Smith (Invercargill), the present holder of the championship, who with an 85 and an 86 had the excellent aggregate of 171. The scores were good, and three players reduced their handicaps. They were: Miss Claire Smith, 10 to nine; Miss L. Douglas (Invercargill), 28 to 27; Mrs O. A. B. Smith (Winton), 29 to 21. As there was not a full entry in the silver division, a number of players will receive byes in the first round of match play. The results of the qualifying rounds were as follows:

A tie occurred in this grade and Mrs Brandford won eighth place on the count back. Following is the draw for the first round of match play to start at 9 a.m. today:— Mrs O. A. B. Smith v. Mrs Brandford; Mrs Smart v. Mrs Clark; Miss I. Shand v. Miss L. Douglas; Mrs Robinson v. Mrs R. Hanan. MEDAL ROUNDS Medal rounds were played in conjunction with the qualifying rounds, and the best cards for the morning were:— Silver Division.—Miss C. Smith, 86-10-76; Mrs J. D. Speirs, 88-11-77; Mrs Tansley, 91-14-77. Bronze Division.—Mrs O. A. B. Smith, 96-29-65; Miss L. Douglas, 102-28-74. In the second medal round played in the afternoon Miss P. McCarthy’s score of 97-19-78 was the best, and Miss R. Pilcher with 97-13-84 was next. Miss L. Douglas headed the bronze division with 99-27-72, and Miss I. Shand was next with 97-21-76. The New Zealand Golf Council received word from the Hamilton Golf Club today that only two Australian players, H. W. Hattersley and Dr Cutler, had entered for the New Zealand championships to begin at Hamilton on September 30. SEMI-FINALS OF AUSTRALIAN CHAMPIONSHIPS (Received September 15, 10.10 p.m.) SYDNEY, September 15. The semi-finals of the golf championships of Australia, played today, resulted:— Amateurs.—T. Tanner defeated M. J. Ryan, 5 and 3; H. L. Williams defeated D. J. Davies, 7 and 6. Professionals.—E. Cremin defeated 0. Walker, 3 and 2; V. S. Richardson defeated T. Booth, 3 and 2.
