Bluff BAND OF HOPE
There was a large attendance for the monthly meeting of the Band of Hope, which was held in Willard Hall. The Rev. T. A. Speer presided. After an address on temperance by the chairman, the following children contributed items: Wilma Niven, Olive Phillips, Gloria McQuarrie, Rita Pay, Valerie Batcheler, Shirley Couchman, Mavis White, Billy Vickery, Jean Vickery, Frank Silvester, Adrian Hart, James Parker, Cremer Jones (recitations); Fred Denny, Alan Lee, Gay Valentine, Betty Valentine, Joyce Lee, Isobel Cheyne (songs); Ray Challis (piano solo). The following took part in playlets: “The Fox Cub Speaks,” Poppy Barnes, Gay Hannan, Cecily Winter, Jean Jamieson, Elaine Jamieson, Blair Driscoll, Cyril Calder, Rita Calder; “The Cratchitt’s Christmas Dinner.” Mr Lopdell’s class. Accompaniments were played by Mrs F. Nicholson and Elsie Denny, EARLY STRAWBERRIES A striking example of the suitability of Bluff soil for gardening is shown by the fact that ripe strawberries have already made an appearance in the garden of Mr G. Mitchell at Ocean Beach. The plants are growing in the open and have received no special attention nor sheltering through rough weather. The fruit is large, plentiful and of excellent quality. Naturally the extraordinarily early ripening of the strawberries has excited the interest of other amateur gardeners at Ocean Beach. BUFFALO LODGE At the fortnightly meeting of the R.A.0.8. Lodge, Bro. T. M. Finnerty, W.P., presided over a good attendance. Two candidates were admitted to the order and another application considered. During the portion of the evening devoted to harmony, items were given by the following: Bros. A. Giles, E. Cameron, C.P.,’ F. Richardson, H. Fincher, T. Fowler, T. West, W. Johnsen, E. S.. Russell, C.P. (songs), F. Belsham, C.P. (accordion solos), W. Hawke (piano solos), A. Giles (recitation). Bros. A. Giles, Hawke and West played the accompaniments. EUCHRE The weekly euchre tournament, in Williard Hall in aid of the Dominican Convent funds was well patronized. Mr L. Mortimer supervised the games and the winners were.—Women: Mrs A. Gilson 1, Mrs W. Parry 2. Men: Mr W. Wills 1, Mr W. Parry 2. Lucky number: Mrs C. Jackson. PERSONAL Mr and Mrs W. E. Harris, Tone street, have returned from a holiday in Christchurch.
