Miss Mona Burgin, Commissioner for Training for Girl Guides (New Zealand), arrived from Auckland on Mon-

day to take two training sessions with Southland guiders. She leaves today for Dunedin, where a training week is to be held at St. Leonard’s.

On Monday evening Mr and Mrs John Macdonald, Avenal, and Mrs Angus Macdonald, The Plains Station, entertained a few friends at dinner to celebrate the coming of age of Miss Helen Macdonald. The function was held at the home of Mrs John Macdonald. The bachelors of Otahuti held a successful ball recently. The hall was decorated with streamers, greenery and coloured lights. The lucky spot waltz was won by Mr L. Leith and Miss M. Edie and the Monte Carlo was won by Mr R. Donald and Miss J. Duthie. Music was supplied by the Bellbird orchestra, and extras were played by the Nuphonic sound system, and Mr L McCallum. Messrs H. Greenhalgh and J. Beggs were masters of ceremonies. The Spar Bush Basketball Club held another of its euchre and dance evenings, in the hall recently. The prizes were won by Mrs D. Johnstone and Mr G. Cringle. Music for the dance was supplied by Mr J. Kerr and extras were played by Miss K. Maloney. Mr G. McCullough was master of ceremonies. Among those present were Mr and Mrs C. McCrostie; Mesdames Flynn (Waikouro), J. McCullough and D. On a recent evening m the Seaward Downs Public Hall the residents of that district gave Miss Euphemia Lorimer a social evening. The guest of honour has been on the teaching staff of the Seaward Downs school for the past few years, and has taken a leading part in the activities of the district The time was passed with dancing, to music supplied by Misses Ivy Drysdale, Joyce Crosbie and Isla Morton. The masters of ceremonies were Messrs H. Morton and J. Rewcastle. The chairman (Mr H. P. Bryant) referred to Miss Lorimer’s work for the school, and to her enthusiastic work as secretary of the Menzies Basketball Association. On behalf of the young people of the district, Mr H. Morton presented the guest of honour with a firescreen and fireside companion set, wishing her success in the future. Miss Doreen Weir, on behalf of the Seaward Downs Basketball Club, asked Miss Lorimer to accept a crystal vase. Supporting remarks were made by Mrs D. Howden (Mataura Island), and Miss Lorimer replied.

The women of the Woodlands Presbyterian Church and the Busy Bees gathered in the church hall last week to bid farewell to Mrs Alex McDonald. The afternoon was . spent in items, games and competitions and afternoon tea was served by the members of the Presbyterian Mission Union. Jean McHardy presented Mrs McDonald with a Victorian posy as a token of affection from the Busy Bees, and Mrs McNatty asked her to accept a crystal sugar basin and cream jug as a farewell gift from those present. Mrs McNatty referred to the willing assistance Mrs MeDonald had given in church matters Sring hS residence at Woodlands. Mrs McDonald replied. Items were given by Miss Betty Montgomery (recitations), Mrs R. Walker (songs) and members of the choir sang choral numbers.

Farewell Party

A big gathering assembled in the Oreti hall on Friday evening to bid farewell to Mr and Mrs E. Murdoch and Mr T. Biondell and family, who are leaving the district. Mr W Norman and Mr T. Hamilton expressed regret at their departure. Mr J. Finlay presented Mr 1. Blondell with a wallet nf nates with best wishes from those present and Mr T. Miller presented Mr and Mrs E. Murdoch with a wallet of notes. Other speakers were Mr T McLean, Mr R. Cowie and the Rev. R. D Miss Letitia Murdoch presented Miss Gladys Blondell with a cup, saucer;and elate from the Busy Bees. Farewell Social

On a recent evening a big number of friends gathered in the Waianiwa hall to bid farewell to Mr and Mrs Townshend and family, who are leaving to live in Drummond. The following contributed items: Solo, Mrs Toole; tap dance, Miss M. McNaughton; solo, Mrs Smithies; Highland dance, Master John Keith.

Mr M. Bruland asked Mr J. Toole to present the guests of honour with a chiming clock, and wished them success in their new home. Gifts were presented also to Betty and Bruce Townshend.

Music for dancing was supplied by Mrs Toole and Mr J. Kerr, extras being played by the harmonica band. Mr J. B. Steans acted as master of ceremonies. Among those present were Mr and Mrs W.
