PARLIAMENT OPENS AT CANBERRA

NATIONAL INSURANCE TO BE CONSIDERED (Received June 17, 11.45 p.m.) CANBERRA, June 17. Opening the Commonwealth Parliament today, the Governor-General (Lord Gowrie) referred to the marked financial and industrial recovery in Australia, the great reduction in unemployment and the corresponding increase in production. Lord Gowrie said the Government intended to appoint an inter-state commission which would deal with major problems between the Commonwealth and the states and would give serious consideration to the question of national insurance. A grant of £200,000 would be made to the states for the vocational training of youths. The development of defence would be seriously undertaken, “in the light of the deliberations at the Imperial Conference.” All supporters of the Federal Ministry in both Houses of the Federal Parliament decided at pro-sessional party meetings to endorse the decision of the Ministry to introduce national insurance in Australia.
