MEET AT THE TURI

A very successful meet of the Birchwood hounds was held at The Turi on Wednesday afternoon. Overhead conditions were dry but the afternoon turned out very dull and cold after brilliant sunshine following the morning’s frost There was a very large attendance. Two runs were held, there being 21 followers, including a number of novices seen out for the first time and all showed an aptitude for the game. Despite the fact that the going was very heavy the jumping was of a high standard.
During afternoon tea the president, Mr J. L. Hazlett, thanked the property holders, Messrs P., A. and W. McCarthy, for the use of their grounds and also the ladies for the afternoon tea they had provided. Mr Hazlett remarked that the meet was easily the best held so far this season, but that was understood, as The Turi could always be relied upon for a good meet. He also mentioned that after afternoon tea a jumping competition was to be held, for which several handsome trophies had been donated. The followers were: The master, Mr W. Swale on Money Mine; the huntsman, Mr J. Langford on Eastern Chief; the whip, Mr T. A. Langford on Bally Brit; also Jumping Joe (J. Boyle), History Paper (J. O’Malley), Tautau Maid (J. Boyle, jun.), Taramoa (J. L. Hazlett), Bandy Boa (W. Butters), The. Gunner (H. Cox), McGlusky (J. Morton), Tailspin (B. Langford), The Grej (I. Munroe), Calamure (B. Campbell), Bounce (W. Porteous), Silken Lad (M. Eagen), Royal Huntsman (P. MeCarthy), Konini (J. Hazlett), Corban (J. Morton), Renoa (J. O’Brien), Pandowa (S. Kean), Jollyanna (B. Langford). The jumping competitions over three board obstacles resulted: MAIDEN The Gunner (W. Kitto) 1 Bounce (B. Langford) 2 OPEN Eastern Chief (T. A. Langford) f Bally Britt (J. Langford) f f Dead heat.
CONSOLATION History Paper (J. O’Malley) 1 Rotowai (W. Boyle) 2 Mr F. Moore, of Winton, acted as judge. At the conclusion of the meet a novelty race over the jumps by some keen supporters amused the gathering. Mr P. McCarthy, after an exhibiton of clean fencing, was announced the winner.
