BASKETBALL CARNIVAL
OPENING ON FRIDAY The basketball carnival to be held in the Victoria Hall on Friday and Saturday promises to be bright and entertaining. There will be numbers of well-laden stalls, competitions and novelties and bargains for all. A baby show, for which an entry fee of sixpence will be charged, will be held on Friday afternoon, with classes for both boys and girls under six months and under one year. A baking competition will also be held with classes for oven and girdle scones, gems, pikelets, but-ter-sponge, plain sponge, shortbread, light and dark fruit cake and fancy biscuits. This will be judged on Friday afternoon and there will be good prizes in all classes. Each evening a programme will be given by pupils of the Southland Girls’ High School and Technical College and members of the American School of Tap Dancing. The carnival will be opened by the Mayor (Mr John Miller) at 2.30 pan. on Friday afternoon and on Saturday evening a 9 pan. the winner of the queen contest will be announced. There will be no charge for admission. On Saturday afternoon all the town basketball teams in uniform will parade from Gala street, along Dee street and Tay street to the Victoria Hall.
