WOMEN’S DIVISION

HEDGEHOPE The monthly meeting of the Hedgehope branch of the Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union was held recently. Mrs Young presided over a fair attendance. Miss McKay, who attended the girls’ educational week in Invercargill, gave a most interesting talk on a visit to the new hospital at Kew.

Competitions resulted as follows:— Worked tea towel: Miss O. Sanderson 1, Miss M. K. McKay and Miss L Jukes equal 2, Miss M. McKay 4. Best bloom: Mrs Young 1. It was decided to hold a bring and buy sale to assist the funds of the division’s house-keeping scheme. The competition for next meeting is to be “Three pikelets” and the roll call “What you do to keep fit” GORGE ROAD BRANCH The monthly meeting of the Gorge Road branch of the Women’s Division was held recently. Mrs J. Manson presided over a small attendance. Schemes were discussed for augmenting the funds of the branch and after several suggestions, suitable plans were arranged. The roll call, “Early Pioneers,” was held over until next month. The competitions resulted:—Gingerbread: Mrs S. Ryan 1, Mrs D. Stewart 2, Miss N. Stewart 3. Best carrot: Miss J. Stewart 1, Mrs D. Stewart 2, Mrs S. Ryan 3. A motion of sympathy was passed with Mr and Mrs W. King and family in their recent bereavement A demonstration and display of fancy baskets, etc., made from pine needles was given. An advertisement competition was won by Miss N. Stewart, and a musical parcel by Mrs D. Stewart SCOTTS GAP There was a good attendance at a meeting of the Scotts Gap branch of the Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union. Mrs J. C. Kane presided. A motion of sympathy was passed with Mrs Sheddan, members standing in It was decided to send a donation to the house-keeping secretary scheme. Mr D. Mitchell gave an instructive talk on bees.
