Fifty Years Ago Today

(From The Southland Times)

JUNE 17, 1887

A Historic Personage.—Mr Kerr remarked in the House the other night that his father was the first person to put a plough into the South Island.

East Invercargill.—The ordinary meeting of the Borough Council was held on Monday evening, the Mayor (Mr T. Findlay) and all the councillors being present. A letter was received from the Charitable Aid Board conveying a resolution to the effect that it would have been more prudent if the council had made some inquiries as to the duties required of the master and matron of the home for the aged and infirm before hazarding an opinion as to the amount of salary proposed to be paid to them. The letter was received and it was resolved to ask Mr Bain (the council’s representative on the board) to furnish particulars of the duties and responsibilities of the position. The Mayor and councillors unanimously expressed the opinion that £2OO per annum was too high a salary. Southland Poultry and Bird Association.—At a well-attended meeting in Mr Raeside’s restaurant on Monday evening it was decided to form an association to be named as above. It was decided not to include dogs in any of the association’s exhibitions, as these animals were known to have caused so great a panic among the birds at similar shows as to detract considerably from their success. The following office-bearers were elected: President, the Rev. Mr Isitt; vice-president, Mr J. Kingsland, sen.; secretary and treasurer, Mr L. Cheyne; committee, Messrs Batchelor, Pickford, Clark, Robbe and Lindsay
