Dr and Mrs L. Bell have returned to Lumsden from a holiday in the north. Miss A. Clark, Bay of Plenty, has been the guest of Miss A. Stevens, Lumsden.

Miss Winsome Wright, Pembroke, arrives today to stay with Mrs R. Story, Venlaw.

Mrs E. S. Macfarlane, of Wyndham, has accepted the office of captain of the Wyndham girl guides. Miss M. Duncan, of Christchurch, is the guest of Mrs R. Dobbie, Menzies Ferry, before leaving for England. Miss Aitkinson, Carterton, who has been the guest of Mrs H. Dagg, Lumsden, has left on her return north. Miss W. Pennington was at a meeting of the Invercargill City Council appointed junior assistant at the public library. Dr Moore, who acted as locum tenens for Dr Bell during the latter’s absence in the north, has left for the north, accompanied by Mrs Moore. Mrs T. Menzies Watson, Morven, Ohai, has returned from an extended holiday in Nelson and is the guest of Mrs J. L. McG. Watson, Forth street. Prior to her marriage, a gift evening was given in honour of Miss E. McCurdy, of Glenham. The function took place in the Glenham Public Hall, and was well-attended. During the evening a vocal solo was contributed by Mrs J. Robertson. After supper, Mrs John McKay, on behalf of those present, asked Miss McCurdy to accept the gifts with best wishes for a happy and prosperous future. Mr E. Rabbidge, the president of the Glenham Tennis Club, asked Miss McCurdy to accept a gift from club members. Mr R. Irwin, jun., also spoke. Mr Jenkins replied on behalf of Miss McCurdy. Music was supplied by Mr W. Brown.

A meeting of the committee of the Southland Girls’ High School Old Girls’ Association was held in the Women’s Club on Monday. The president, Miss G. Basstian, presided over the following members:—Misses I. Smythe, G. McKenzie, M. Crawford, R. Reid, J. Bisset, J. Pack, M. Chisholm and N. Meredith. It was decided to donate two guineas to the King George V Memorial Fund. In connection with the memorial fund to the late Mr Charles Gray, it was decided to remind members of the association that donations could be forwarded to committee members. The association proposes to combine with the Old Boys’ Association to hold a musical evening for Mr Alex Lindsay sometime in July. A sub-committee consisting of Mrs E. K. Mills, Misses M. Crawford and J. Bisset was appointed to deal with this. It is also proposed to hold a basketball match against the present pupils. The next evening will be held on Thursday, June 10, and will take the form of a play reading.
