GOLDEN JUBILEE OF WEDDING

MR D. ROBERTSON PRESENTATION FROM FELLOW EMPLOYEES Reference to the 57 years of service with the company of Mr D. Robertson, day foreman, was made by speakers yesterday afternoon when members of the staff of The Southland Times assembled at a function arranged in honour of the golden jubilee of his wedding. A presentation to Mr and Mrs Robertson was made by Mr W. F. Bisset, advertising manager, who spoke of Mr Robertson’s long association with the company and of his excellent qualities. The staff had assembled, he said, to commemorate an event that took place 50 years ago the previous day—the golden jubilee of the wedding of Mr and Mrs Robertson. He had been associated with Mr Robertson for 25 years and during that time had found him an admirable person with whom to work. On behalf of the staff of The Southland Times, Mr Bisset presented Mr Robertson with a carpet square for Mrs Robertson and a pair of pipes for himself.

On behalf of the literary staff the chief of staff (Mr N. Earl) congratulated Mr Robertson and spoke briefly of his qualities. He expressed the hope that Mr and Mrs Robertson would enjoy good health and happiness in the future.

Mr F. N. Anderson, accountant, representing the office staff, Mr G. J. Hope (night foreman), Mr J. F. Thom (jobbing manager), Mr J. McCormick (foreman of the stereotype department) and Mr J. Birss (engineer) also spoke; Presentation of Cheque The managing director (Mr R. J. Gilmour) said it gave him great pleasure to join with the staff in complimenting Mr Robertson and to express his congratulations at the attainment of his golden jubilee. He said that next June would mark the 58th anniversary of Mr Robertson’s joining the staff. This made him the oldest member of the staff. The Southland Times, generally, had been fortunate in its staff. Mr Robertson’s record of service might be regarded as an example to the rest of the staff.

Mr Gilmour spoke of Mr Robertson’s excellent qualities, his splendid fitness and health and of his own long association with him. He mentioned, also, the changes in economic conditions that had occurred through the years. On behalf of the directors of the company, Mr Gilmour presented Mr Robertson with a cheque for £5O. Replying, Mr Robertson thanked the speakers for their kind remarks and those present for their gifts. He recalled that 50 years ago he had received the best wishes of the late Mr Robert Gilmour on the eve of his marriage and said it was remarkable that, after so many years, he should be the recipient of a similar expression of goodwill from his son. Mr Robertson spoke briefly of his connection with the company.
