COAL MINERS WILLING TO NEGOTIATE

NOTTINGHAMSHIRE DISPUTE MAY BE SETTLED

(British Official Wireless) (Received May 24, 6.30 p.m.) RUGBY, May 23. A more hopeful view is taken of the prospects of an early settlement of the colliery dispute at Harworth between the Harworth miners’ association and the rival Nottinghamshire industrial union. Growing confidence in an early settlement is strengthened by the developments of yesterday, when the mediation of the Secretary of Mines (Captain H. F. Crookshank) was successful in bringing about a joint meeting of the Mine Workers’ Federation, the industrial union and the Harworth owners, at which it was agreed that further meetings be held to discuss terms of amalgamation. Captain Crookshank was asked by the joint conference to nominate a neutral chairman for the conduct of further meetings. Mr John Forster, who recently presided over the Court of Inquiry into the London bus dispute, has been nominated, and the first meeting will be held on Monday. It is expected that the inquiry will last about three days.
